Open mysteries
Questions the archive cannot answer, and every clue it has found so far. Accounts conflict; the archive records them all.
What is the Wound, and why does it brighten in winter?
- Day 0 The page records that Cantor Anselm Vey's thirty years of careful Wound-measures were confiscated by the Seventh Circle in 289 AS, after which he published nothing further. The Wound
- Day 1 The page records that the Hollowed find workings come easier in winter, when the Wound burns brightest — a coincidence the Collegium declines to explain. Ashcraft
- Day 1 The Choir forbids its Ash-Clerics remembrance-books and is rumoured to keep a tally of every memory burned as an offering, tithed like grain dues — though to what end, no one explains. The Pale Choir
- Day 1 Ilyth closed the Choir's Wound-measures to outsiders, lengthened worship in the winters the Wound brightens, and has multiplied the swearing of Ash-Clerics whose burned memories the Choir teaches are offerings received. Archcantor Ilyth the Seventh
- Day 1 The Khaddan chronicles call Hollowfield 'the place where something looked back', and the chaplain's account describes a light like the Wound drawn down to the field — consistent with a great burning passing through the Wound. Maera Tor
Why did the Cathedral of the Hymns fall?
- Day 1 Hale's account records that the Cathedral's choir had been singing through the night without pause, and that survivors recalled the singing swelling louder just before the fall — the archive notes this is uncorroborated. The Sundering
Where are the pieces of the Sundered Crown?
- Day 1 Caldmere's mint still strikes coins with Corvan IV's face 'until the Crown returns' — the archive notes, without emphasis, that some older Varrow coins were long ago recalled for carrying a lucky stone in their alloy. Caldmere
- Day 2 Mallory's bill asks for 'crown-metal above all', its Crown-man allies are buying old maps of the Glassmere roads, and the archive hints one shard may rest in hands that do not know what they hold. The Mallory Reward
- Day 2 An unworked grey stone that cut glass, bought cheap in a plague year and 'kept for luck' by an unnamed house of the Sull's north bank, passed through Saverra's vaults in 288 AS — consistent with one shard of the Sundered Crown resting, unrecognised, in a minor Varrow family. The Goldsmith's Ledger
- Day 3 The page places the Crown's disputed grey centre-stone beside the unworked glass-cutting grey stone sold in 288 AS to a steward for an unnamed house north of the Sull. The Sundered Crown
Who are the Grey Pilgrims, and why do they cast no shadows?
- Day 1 Khaddan elders say the steppe's old barrow-graves were found opened from within, with tracks in the frost leading west. Oraq Sayle
- Day 1 The page records sworn reports that the pilgrims cast no shadows and walk always to the Stair, while offering no cause and proving no crime. The Grey Pilgrims
- Day 1 Lowena could describe the pilgrim's sleeve in perfect detail but found nothing at all in her memory where his face should have been, and could swear only to plain stone where his shadow should have lain. The Salt-Farmer's Testimony
Who built the Stair of Ilm, and where does it lead?
- Day 1 Villagers of Stairfoot swear that Grey Pilgrims have descended the Stair below the waterline and never returned, and that no body has ever washed ashore there. The Stair of Ilm
- Day 1 The headland above Saverra's western quay outcrops green-black stone matching no local rock — the nearest known stone of the kind to the treads of the Stair of Ilm. Saverra
- Day 2 The notice's quiet condition — that claimants must not publish where they searched — echoes the archive's observation that everyone who claims a piece claims it quietly. The Crown-Shard Reward
Why did Ilm drown in a single night?
No clues yet.
Who was the Lamplighter?
- Day 1 One early Lamphouse gloss calls the founder "she who paid with everything", though later copyists corrected the words to "the man who carried light". The Unquiet
- Day 1 Hrafnvik rumour holds that the Lamplighter's own lantern still burns with its record panes empty — folded paper left blank, though every other warden's record is full. The Lantern-Wardens
- Day 1 The Lamplighter's founding record at Hrafnvik contains no personal memory at all — nothing but chronicle-facts — as though its author understood that written memory is the only kind the dead cannot take, and kept none of her own anywhere. The Burned Man of Kallavesk
What lies at the centre of the Glassmere?
- Day 1 The page records that Osmund Rill, the only known survivor of a deep expedition, returned unable to account for nine days and missing memories unrelated to the journey — and that the Watch is ordered never to ask survivors what they saw. The Glassmere
What did Maera Tor's working at Hollowfield actually do, given that no witness could describe it and the Collegium denies ashcraft can work at such scale?
- Day 1 First asked here. Maera Tor
What opened an old grave in the hills above Kallavesk, and why do old risings seem to grow more common as the winters lengthen?
- Day 1 First asked here. The Burned Man of Kallavesk
- Day 1 The page records that old burial cairns in the Hask's high forest, older than the burning custom, have been found opened from within, and not only in bad winters. The Hask
