About the archive
The Ashen Archive is the record of the Reach: a dark fantasy world of a dying empire, a church that worships a wound in the sky, monster-hunters who carry their memories in lanterns, and a sea that swallowed a kingdom in a night.
A world that grows every day
Every morning the archive adds two pages and one tale. Some pages are new: a person, a place, a creature, a contract pinned to a notice board. Others grow: a war takes a turn, a city changes hands, a rumour is confirmed or denied. Names mentioned in passing appear as red links: the archive knows they exist, but not yet what they are. One day they may be written.
How to read it
The archivists are honest about what they don’t know. Where accounts disagree, both are recorded. The open mysteries collect every clue, and the Chronicle records what changed each day. The map gains a pin whenever a new place is written.
Paintings
Every page has a painting in the archive’s own style: oil on board, ash and umber, and, whenever the sky shows, the pale scar of the Wound.
Translations
The archive is written in English and translated into Spanish, French, German, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese and Japanese by machine on the day each page appears. Where a page has no translation yet, the English is shown.
